Steve Winwood & The Allman Brothers

Aug. 31, Verizon Amphitheater, Charlotte, NC

Steve Winwood has a long and distinguished rock history.  His soulful voice has been a rock staple for decades. In his younger days, he played with Traffic. He had his own rock hits in the 1980s – Higher Love and Back in the High Life Again. We’ve heard him several times and were psyched he was billed with The Allman Brothers. Stevie played first and he played several oldies and some of his hits. Can’t Find My Way Home is amazing.

The Allman Brothers took the stage after Steve and they really rocked the big Charlotte outdoor venue. The Carolinas expressed their appreciation for the Allmans. They were rewarded with Blue Sky, Midnight Rider, Statesboro Blues and Blind Willie McTell.

The Allman Brothers featured Gregg Allman, who looked thinner but healthy. He had a liver transplant several years ago and seems healthy. Warren Haynes and Derek Truck were on duty so the screaming guitar solos were plentiful.  I was impressed Gregg really wailed on the opener One Way Out.  It didn’t take long for him to warm up! The Allman Brothers are southern rock at its best.

The show really took off when Steve came out to join the Allman Brothers for Levon Helm’s The Weight and then followed it up with I Found A Love.

Sorry for the cell phone pictures. Couldn’t get my good camera in.
