There was a big crowd (I heard 3,500) for the final event in the Friday Cheers series. It looked like the series put on some good shows earlier in the summer with Groups like No BS Brass Band and the popular The Head and The Heart, Trampled by Turtles and Alabama Shakes. Too bad I didn’t tune into this earlier in the year! Hate to miss some of those acts. This series is definitely worth checking out for next year.
The venue was Brown’s Island, a nice park space along the river in downtown Richmond. The show wasn’t very expensive, $10 advance purchase. It would be a good way to start off a weekend in Richmond. Book a night or two in downtown Richmond and there are a lot of fun and interesting things to do to make a weekend of the capitol of the Commonwealth.
James Justin & Co put on a great show to open the night. Jeremy Garrett, of the Infamous Stringdusters, joined them for Travelin’ Kind. The Infamous Stringdusters took the stage in front of a big Friday Cheers audience. Their show was a fun, fast tour of their bluegrass and rock influences. They did a killer version of In God’s Country and Walking on the Moon. 17 Cents is always a favorite. Summer Camp was appropriate for a summer’s evening as was Night on the River. Cripple Creek was a treat too. The show wrapped up with a double encore of Steam Powered Aeroplane and No More to Leave You Behind.
